Weddings

Selection of music

One of the things Jamie often encounters when he gets calls for weddings is that the people whose wedding he is to play have no idea what they want in terms of music. In case you're stumped yourself, these are the tunes he most often plays. Each one is linked to a MIDI file that you can play through your sound card.

Entrance

Between the readings

Signing of the register

Exit

Other ideas

Jamie's standard program is Purcell's "Trumpet Tune" for the entrance, Schubert's "Ave Maria" for the signing of the register, and Beethoven's "Ode to Joy" for the exit. If you want him to play material other than that listed above, feel free to let him know. He does get calls where his clients want Wagner's "Bridal Chorus" (sometimes erroneously referred to as "Here Comes the Bride") for the entrance and/or Mendelssohn's "Wedding March" for the exit, but in his experience, people are starting to move away from this material in favor of alternatives such as those listed above. He even gets occasional calls to play modern pop material, such as Shania Twain's "From This Moment On". If you intend to have Jamie learn something special along these lines, assume he does not know it already unless you know for sure he does, and accordingly, give him time to prepare it. See the guidelines section of this page for more details.

Signing the Contract

As Jamie is a member of the American Federation of Musicians, and weddings are different from regular masses in that the church has no involvement with how he is paid, the AFM requires that he prepare and have you fill out a standard contract, which he will bring to the wedding rehearsal; you should therefore let him know when that is going to take place too. When the contract is filled out, he will make a copy of it for your records. He will keep a copy for his records and file the original with the union office.

Funerals

Jamie's standard program for funerals is as follows (all hymns from Catholic Book of Worship III):

  • Entrance: Be Not Afraid—CBW III #481
  • Psalm: Psalm 23—CBW III #606
  • Offertory: Amazing Grace—CBW III #480
  • Communion: Now in This Banquet—CBW III #608
  • Closing: How Great Thou Art—CBW III 554

Alternative hymns include the following:

  • Let All Things Now Living—CBW III #534
  • O Lord of Life—CBW I #435
  • Lord, Jesus Christ, Abide With Us—CBW III #659
  • Love is Come Again—CBW II #502 (especially appropriate around Christmas time, as it uses the melody of "Noël Nouvelet")

If you want to select your own material, you may, but please be aware that the Catholic Church frowns on the use of secular material. As the "Guidelines for Music in the Mass" in Catholic Book of Worship II states: "Secular music has no place in Christian worship. Romantic songs from secular sources—movies, stage shows, hit parades—are to be avoided. Music and words used in Catholic liturgies should lead the community to a greater love for God and his people."

As with the wedding material, if you intend to have Jamie learn something special, including special hymns, assume he does not know it already unless you know for sure he does, and accordingly, give him time to prepare it. See the guidelines section of this page for more details, particularly a Babylon 5 anecdote therein that illustrates the kind of logistical scenario to avoid. Also, if you are planning on preparing programs for the attendees, and you have not yet specified to Jamie which hymns you are planning on using, be sure to let him know your choices by no later than the evening before the funeral so that he can run off the appropriate material for his binder.
