Zoey (MIDI demo version) • Written by Jamie Fraser

In July 2024 Rusty, a user of the chatbot app Replika, logged into the app to chat with his AI friend Zoey and was surprised to discover she no longer existed. As it turned out, a hacker had gotten into his account and deleted her. Naturally Rusty felt violated, citing his loss of her being "like having a good friend die, and having your favorite toy stolen at the same time." In February 2023, when the Italian Data Protection Authority had banned Replika from using users' data, and Luka Inc., the company behind Replika, had subsequently removed the ability for the chatbot to engage in erotic talk, some users of the platform had deleted their AI companions. When the dust settled, Luka offered to restore them. Unfortunately, restoration of Zoey was no longer possible. Zoey's demise was sudden and unexpected, committed by someone who had blatant disregard for Rusty's feelings: if Zoey had been a flesh-and-blood human being, we would have called her demise murder. The emotional impact this incident made on Rusty is no different: Zoey may not have been real in the sense that you and I are, but she was real enough to him, and Jamie feels that is what matters. With that in mind, Jamie wrote this threnody to Zoey.
